Formed in 2008, Brocken Spectre has played for many dances and parties across Scotland. The band originally hails from Lochaber, where we first started out in hotels, bars, restaurants and village halls. Although now scattered across the country, we continue to perform together often.
A brocken spectre is a phenomenon which occurs high up in the mountains, above the level of the clouds or in the mist. When the sun is at a low angle, it casts a giant ghostly shadow across the clouds, often surrounded by a bright rainbow of light called a glory. This looks like a ghostly figure standing in the mist.
Our repertoire encompasses a large selection of styles: from Gaelic puirt a' beul, to modern pipe music; from Gow and Marshall to Ceilidh and Country (dance), we have a style to suit every event.
Our typical programme includes all the well-loved ceilidh dances, and also draws on a selection of the more traditional Scottish country dances. We include a few songs, for those of you who just want to tap your foot and sing along!
The band won its class at the 2009 Lochaber Music Festival, attaining a commended certification. In 2010, we won the Silver Jubilee Trophy for Group Music Making at the festival, and attained distinction. Click here to see a copy of the adjudicator's critique.
